NY tint simulator

Window tint simulator: see your car tinted before you book

Choose a body type or upload a photo of your own car. Then try every shade from 70% to 5%, window by window, in three XPEL films. Each window is checked against New York tint law as you change it.

The preview is a guide. Real tint looks different depending on the light, the viewing angle and your car's factory glass, which may already be tinted. The legal notes summarize NY VTL §375(12-a) in plain language and aren't legal advice. 70% is measured through film plus glass.

How the preview works

Most tint previews lay a flat grey shape over the glass, and every shade ends up looking fake. Ours darkens only what you see through the glass. Light passes through the film twice, into the cabin and back out, so a 35% film makes the interior look much darker than 35%. Reflections of the sky and the shop lights stay bright, just as they do on a real tinted car.

In photo mode, a small segmentation model runs right in your browser. You tap each window, it traces the glass, and you say which window it is. Your photo stays on your phone or computer.

New York rules at a glance

  • Front side windows: at least 70%, measured through film plus glass, on every vehicle.
  • Rear side windows: 70% on sedans and coupes. Any shade on SUVs, vans and pickups.
  • Rear window: any shade if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides.
  • Windshield: a tint strip on the top 6 inches only. Clear heat-rejection film is a common legal upgrade.

Tint simulator and NY law: common questions

What does the tint percentage (VLT) mean?
VLT stands for visible light transmission: the share of light that passes through the window. 70% is nearly clear, 35% is a medium shade, 20% is dark and 5% is limo tint. Lower numbers are darker.
What tint is legal in New York?
On every vehicle, the windshield and front side windows must let through at least 70% of light, and the windshield may only be tinted on its top 6 inches. Sedans, coupes and other passenger cars need 70% on the rear side windows too. SUVs, vans and pickups can go as dark as they like on the rear side windows. Any vehicle with outside mirrors on both sides can have any shade on the rear window. Our NY tint law guide covers the details.
Is a 70% film legal on my front windows?
Not always. New York measures the film and the glass together, and factory glass already blocks some light. Put a 70% film on top and it usually reads below 70% on an inspection meter. That's why the simulator marks 70% fronts as borderline. We meter your glass first and recommend a clear ceramic film that keeps you legal.
Why does the simulator mark my SUV's rear windows legal but not my sedan's?
NY's 70% rule for rear side windows applies only to vehicles labelled "Passenger Car" on the door-jamb sticker (sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, wagons). SUVs, crossovers, vans and pickups are classed differently, so their rear side windows have no limit.
How accurate is the preview?
Treat it as a guide. We darken the glass the way real film does and keep the reflections. Lighting, viewing angle, interior colour and your car's factory glass will still change how tint looks in person, and many SUVs already have dark privacy glass in the back. Come by the shop in Ronkonkoma to see real film samples on glass.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser resizes the photo and strips its location data, and the window detection runs on your device. We only see it if you tick "Attach my preview" when you send a quote request.
Can I get darker tint with a medical exemption?
Yes. With an approved DMV MV-80W exemption we can install darker film on the windshield and front side windows. The exemption doesn't cover anything else.
